Occupational health and safety policy

Note Printing Australia (NPA) designs, manufactures and markets banknotes, passports and other security solutions for Australia and overseas markets.

NPA acknowledges that its employees are its most valuable resource. It endeavours to provide a workplace free of hazard and risk, to ensure that the health and safety of its employees are not compromised. A process of hazard identification and risk assessment is used to identify hazards regularly, and corrective/preventive measures implemented where required, based on the hierarchy of controls. Staff are encouraged to raise any issue relating to safety with their managers or designated health and safety representatives in the first instance. However, they also have the capacity to raise any pertinent issues directly with an Executive Committee (EC) member. Monthly safety committee meetings, attended by EC members, also monitor a broard range of OH&S matters.

A system based approach certified to AS/NZS 4801:2001 is adopted to manage Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), where every staff member is aware of their obligations, is adequately trained and is competent to carry out their daily duties to avoid risk of injury to themselves and fellow workers.

The policy is reviewed annually as part of the business planning process and corporate OH&S objectives. Measurable targets are established which are linked to departmental and individual objectives to foster a culture of continual improvement. These are regularly reviewed by the Executive Committee to monitor progress, and where necessary, corrective measures implemented.

NPA ensures that its legal obligations imposed under the relevant Acts and Regulations are met, and demonstrates due diligence by complying with relevant Codes of Practice. These requirements are captured in working documents such as Policies, Procedures, Work Instructions and job descriptions that provide the framework for employees to perform their duties in compliance with legislation. Records are maintained as evidence of compliance. NPA ensures that it is kept up to date on changes to legislation that may impact on the organisation through a contractual agreement with a reputed OH&S consulting company.

NPA's Safety Policy has been developed in consultation with the OH&S Representatives, Union Delegates and staff, and has the total support of the Executive Committee.
