NPA ACHIEVES 80% WASTE DIVERSION FROM LANDFILL

SUSTAINABILITY: Driven through the consistent effort of our Environmental Officer, Aninah Chua, NPA has enjoyed a dramatic improvement in its waste diversion practices, lifting from around 60% at the start of the 2024-25 financial year, to an amazing 80% by June 30.

“Given the Victorian State Government benchmark for diversion from landfill is 72%, Aninah has collaborated with a wide range of stakeholders from across the business – Maintenance, Passports, Print Hall, Stores, Finishing, Trade Waste and Consignment Security – to take NPA from being behind the curve to now being out in front of it!” says Jodie Hill, our Chief HR Officer. “The key challenge now is to continue maintaining this rate.”

“This improvement in waste diversion was made possible through the support of the team, and people who truly care about the environment and are committed to make a difference,” says Aninah.

Top items that have impacted this change are:

• Timber Pallets: Increased 56% from FY 23/24. (14.9 tonnes to 33.51 tonnes)

• Paper and Cardboard: Increased 15% from FY 23/24 (86.2 tonnes to 100.82 tonnes)

• Soft Plastics: New program - 1.83 tonnes diverted

• Batteries: 1.22 tonnes diverted

“It’s also important to acknowledge the impact that the Waste Warrior Program is having on the business,” says Aninah. “Everyone is more aware of how to dispose of their waste properly and we’re seeing much better segregation of our waste – this has resulted in a far greater percentage of recyclables going to the recycling centre rather than into general waste and landfill.”

Waste Warrior is an organisation-wide effort that is helping NPA divert waste from landfill due to improved sorting of our recyclables while generally educating employees on waste reduction that will not only benefit the company but also families, communities, and the environment.
