SUSTAINABILITY: In a determined step toward enhancing sustainability and reducing landfill contribution, a new waste segregation initiative was successfully implemented on the Finishing floor starting Monday 19 May.
Meet the Team Behind the Change
The project was led by Vince Coffano, supported by team members Jaspreet Sandhu and Elenise Tamati, with valuable guidance from Mark Parsons. Their collaborative effort and shared commitment to sustainability laid the foundation for a well-planned and executed transition.
Knights in Recyclable Armour: The Finishing Department's recent waste management intiative included strong contributions from Jaspreet Sandhu and Vince Coffano
Why the Project Was Needed
The project arose from a growing concern about the lack of effective waste segregation within the Finishing department, which resulted in recyclable consumable products being disposed of as landfill waste. The aim was clear: introduce a more environmentally responsible waste disposal system without disrupting production efficiency.
Project Highlights and Implementation
To address the issue, the team introduced clearly labelled recycling bins and informative posters placed in strategic locations across the department. These tools help staff easily identify how and where to dispose of different waste materials. A major highlight of the initiative has been the enthusiastic support from the entire department, which has led to a noticeable reduction in landfill waste and an increase in properly sorted recyclables.
A key feature of the program is the appointment of a dedicated Waste Warrior on each of the three shifts. These individuals are responsible for overseeing the process, ensuring proper segregation, and verifying that waste is managed in line with the company’s sustainability goals. At the end of each shift, team members transfer waste from individual bins to larger wheelie bins, with the Waste Warrior checking and signing off on a visible checklist.
Steps to Success
The initiative began with an open call for volunteers to take a leadership role in waste management. Vince Coffano stepped forward and presented the idea to manager Mark Parsons, who provided immediate support. Together, they developed a roadmap for the project, starting with consultation across the department to gather feedback and suggestions.
Following a presentation at the monthly department meeting, the team engaged with the sustainability and environment management team, including Hiru and Aninah, to align with broader sustainability goals and receive formal approval. Further meetings with Aninah helped determine bin types, poster design, and clarification of consumables sorting requirements.
A final presentation to the department ensured that all team members were informed and equipped to support the rollout. Since then, the three Waste Warriors have played a key role in ongoing training and leadership across shifts, ensuring waste continues to be segregated using the tools and resources provided.
Clear Impacts
There is already clear evidence of waste reduction thanks to the strong support and commitment from the team. It is estimated that minimum 850 kg of landfill waste will be diverted each year.
This project is a great example of how leadership, thoughtful planning, and team collaboration can create meaningful change. By embracing sustainability at operations, the Finishing department has not only improved its environmental footprint but has also cultivated a culture of shared responsibility and continuous improvement.
